How could Garmin top the incredibly popular 696? By creating an entirely new GPS that combines a mini-glass cockpit and a full Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). The new touch-screen 796 replaces stacks of paper charts, and offers unmatched situational awareness, including Garmin’s exclusive 3D Vision display. It’s a reliable everyday navigator, and the best backup GPS we’ve ever seen.

New features:

• 3D Vision. A Garmin exclusive, this incredible view is similar to a glass cockpit’s synthetic vision display, depicting your airplane as it flies over realistic terrain features. While it does not provide pitch information, you’ll see groundspeed and GPS altitude on vertical tapes, plus rate of turn and track. Terrain is color-coded based on your altitude, and airport runways are pictured just like the real world.

• Complete digital charts. The 796 is a complete replacement for paper charts, with sectionals, IFR Hi/Lo En Route Charts and IFR Approach Charts. These “smart charts” are geo-referenced, so you can watch your airplane move across the chart, and you can tap on chart features for more information. Switching between charts takes just the tap of a button.

• Responsive touch-screen. The 796’s new capacitive touch-screen is Garmin’s best yet, responsive and fast when zooming in or panning charts. It also includes iPhone-like pinch zooming and a dedicated “back” button for quick navigation.

• Bright, sunlight-readable 7″ screen. Garmin’s brightest screen yet combines with specially coated glass to reduce glare and improve sunlight readability. In our direct sunlight tests, we found the 796 to be superior to any other GPS or tablet.

• Document manager. Load operations manuals, FARs and other documents on the 796 with its built-in document viewer. It’s perfect for use as a full EFB.
Scratchpad app. For going completely paper-free, the 796 includes a scratchpad that allows you to take notes or copy IFR clearances.

Plus Garmin favorites:

• XM Weather receiver included. Garmin still offers the best in-flight weather experience—with no complicated setup and no expensive add-ons. Just plug in the small antenna and go fly. You’ll have access to more weather than any other portable, including NEXRAD radar, satellite images, METARs, TAFs and more.

• Panel view. Overlay Garmin’s famous “panel page” on the moving map for near-real time backup instruments.

• Terrain view and alerts. Color-coded top-down and side views show nearby terrain and obstacles, and provide pop-up alerts based on your altitude.

• AOPA Airport Directory. The most complete collection of airport information, including FBOs, hotels, restaurants, rental cars and more.

• Taxiway diagrams. Geo-referenced diagrams for over 700 airports, including taxiway labels, runway incursion hot spots and hold short lines.

FSX Description:
Flight Simulator X marks the tenth version of the popular line of flight simulators. It was officially released to the US market on October 17, 2006 for the use in FlyAero Virtual (http://www.flyaerova.com). According to Microsoft’s Web site for the game, a standard edition features everything from navaids to GPS and airways. It also includes 18 planes, 28 detailed cities, and over 24,000 airports with a deluxe version featuring 24 aircraft, and 38 cities.
Flight Simulator X was officially unveiled at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) as a gaming showcase for Microsoft Windows Vista and is now also compatible with Windows 7 and used in FlyAero Virtual. Microsoft released screenshots as well as a list of frequently asked questions as a press release on Microsoft Flight Simulator Insider, and numerous flight simulator communities. This also included mission-based gameplay with mission specific aircraft as well as an upgraded rendering engine capable of increased detail. Following the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May 2006, Microsoft published new screenshots, videos and an official trailer. The overall reaction by the community was quite positive, and the graphical quality of the simulator has greatly increased.

Flight Simulator X was released in three editions: Standard, Deluxe, and later Gold. The Deluxe Edition incorporates additional features, including an on-disc software development kit (SDK), three airplanes with the Garmin G1000 Flightdeck, and the ability for the player to act as Air Traffic Control (ATC) for other online users with a radar screen.[dead link]
The Deluxe Edition features 24 aircraft compared to 18 in the Standard Edition; 45 high-detail airports compared to 40; 38 high-detail cities compared to 28; and 51 structured missions compared to more than 30.
The new features in Flight Simulator X include:
Improved graphics including enhanced texture resolution, new Earth model facilitating polar flights, true road data, region-specific textures, minimal 3D animals, star constellations, etc. Also, the scenery textures now line up with the automatically generated (Autogen) buildings. Maximum rendering-engine-supported scenery resolution of 7 cm/pixel (not available with default scenery).
Airports now have jetways that move to the aircraft by the key combination Ctrl + J. (happens for AI aircraft automatically) Airport vehicles also drive around the airport to the player’s aircraft and AI aircraft. (Baggage cars, pushtrucks, fuel trucks, etc.)
The built-in GPS support has been upgraded to include Garmin G1000 integrated glass cockpit, (select aircraft in the Deluxe version only).
Improved ATC featuring certain non-FAA procedures where appropriate (for example, altimeter/QNH scale in metric units) and numerous minor updates such as an improved progressive-taxi feature.
Improved and new default aircraft including, for example, an Airbus A321. Default aircraft systems modeling is rather extensively improved, featuring, for example, APU, fire protection, passenger advisory sign switches etc.
Improved weather system, including better visibility modeling.

Tower Controller, a feature in the Deluxe version allowing users to simulate local control at many airports worldwide during multiplayer gaming.
Revamped sound system with support for 5.1 surround sound.
In Flight Simulator X, the developers have decided to liven the game play, and along with Free Flight mode, introduced more than 50 different missions.[10]
Proprietary SimConnectAPI to allow FSUIPC-like access to Flight Simulator functions and variables.[11]
Mission engine allowing creation of dynamic missions with developer control of many simulation variables, sound file playback, AI aircraft traffic etc. in relation to what the user is doing — essentially an evolution over the APL and ABL adventure programming languages featured in previous versions of the software. Dozens of missions ship with the product.

On November 2nd, 2009, Garmin International Inc. introduced their latest in innovative developments, the aera™ series, bridging the gap between aviation and automotive GPS devises. With one touch, the aera™ models can transition from touchscreen to multi-mode. The all-in-one GPS system will combine Garmin’s well-known operational ease of the automotive models with the extensive, yet initiative aviation systems. The aera™ series will include four different models: aera 500, aera 510, aera 550, and the aera 560.

In-flight software capabilities vary by model depending on whether customers seek an entry or mid-level aviation handheld, but all units come standard with a 4.3 inch QVGA touchscreen display. Easy-to-read icons indicate function for quick access to such items as: map, weather, terrain, direct to, HIS/panel, active FPL, numbers, nearest, WPT info, position, XM radio, and tools. Those who choose to purchase the aera 550 or aera 560 will also have immediate access to SafeTaxi, now including geo-referenced diagrams of over 950 U.S. airports, as well as the AOPA Airport Directory. Pilots will be able to easily manage their aviation databases through fly.Garmin.com, where a quick synopsis will alert the owner of any necessary updates or purchases.

When a pilot is ready to transition to the road, a quick press of the airplane icon at the top of the aera screen will transition the unit into the familiar automotive interface found on Garmin zumo and nuvi models. Those who purchase the aera 510 or the aera 560 will be able to enjoy the units XM and XM WX Satellite Weather capabilities even in the automotive mode. In addition, all models will feature Bluetooth Wireless Technology that allows the unit to be paired with Bluetooth enabled phones, letting a driver receive and place phone calls directly from the aera. The new series will be on display and available for purchase for the first time at the AOPA Summit, November 5-7, 2009.

XM Datalink Weather
The new aera from Garmin will change the way you look at touch-screen GPSs. This series of compact GPSs is packed with cutting-edge features based on Garmins industry-leading expertise in both aviation and automotive GPSs. A completely new interface makes these the easiest-to-use Garmins yet: simply tap the icons to access the desired page, then drag your finger to navigate through each page. Its also well-suited to the cockpit, with large buttons, minimal button-pushing, and a sunlight-readable 4.3 screen. Includes internal GPS antenna and internal battery.

Aviation Features
•Detailed moving maps with land data, airports, airspace, navaids and much more.
•Terrain page warns of nearby terrain or obstacles, including a side profile view.
•Comprehensive nearest airport screen shows airports, weather, navaids and more.
•Detailed airport information pages with runways, frequencies and more.
•Garmins famous panel page, with nearly real-time updates, is a great emergency backup.
•The aera 510 and 560 also feature XM Satellite Datalink Weather.

Automotive Features
•Intuitive turn-by-turn navigation, with spoken street names.
•Millions of points of interest pre-loaded (hotels, gas stations, ATMs and more).
•aera 550 and 560 feature Garmins Lane Assist feature, so you never miss an exit.
•Media player and picture viewer keep you entertained on the road.

New Accessories
Also new with the aera are Garmins unique single wire mounts, one for your airplanes yoke and one for your cars dash. These organize the maze of wires coming out of your GPS into a single one. There is only one connection to the back of the aera, making it fast and easy to move from plane to car and back again. Also includes carrying case, wall charger, cigarette lighter adapter and audio earphones.
